Basically I decided to leave the multimedia studio I was working at as a full-time illustrator/graphic designer to start on my own as a freelancer.
I’ve been wanting to freelance completely for a couple of years now and couldn’t find the courage to take that step (financial fears), but after April happened I decided it was the best thing for me.
For those of you who don’t know, in April I had a massive panic attack with temporary limb and facial paralysis which put me in the ER overnight. I got out of it ok and had to take 2 weeks off work, go through therapy and take anxiety meds and anti-depressants (still on them but the dose is much lower, thank goodness). During this time I realized that I was putting A LOT of pressure on myself to be better at what I do, I was dealing with tons of insecurity issues that I didn’t even know I had, repressed stuff, work stress, long hours at the office, lack of sleep….it all came to a head in April.
I lost a lot of weight, I felt stuck, so I made the decision to leave my current job and office hours in general. I’ve worked in agencies and offices before and the schedules affected my health a lot, so the best thing is to go my own way and work on projects that mean something to me.
At the studio I participated in some pretty cool projects (I hope to share stuff in a month or two) but I felt caged by the hours and the cubicles. Plus, the building is outside the city and public transport is revolting. I got home late just to eat and sleep and the personal art I did is during my lunchbreak or on sundays, because I also worked saturdays.
I’ve learnt SO MUCH at the studio, and made amazing friends and it’s tough to leave but I know it’s for the best. I want to write/draw comics and just DRAW, so I’m taking a leap of faith.
I’m going to be around social media more often to put myself out there, maybe open commissions because this will be my ONLY INCOME. I also want to take this moment to sincerely thank ALL of my watchers for your support and your overall awesomeness, I feel cherished and very lucky to have you.
